PlatinumGames Acquires The Wonderful 101 From Nintendo

PlatinumGames has acquired The Wonderful 101 franchise from Nintendo, though it’s unclear if the developer plans to make any sequels.

As reported by VGC, a document sent to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office requests a transferral of ownership for the IP, originally released on the Nintendo Wii U but later remastered for Nintendo Switch. Nintendo is listed as the current owner while PlatinumGames is listed as the proposed owner.

The Wonderful 101 has remained a Nintendo exclusive since its initial release in 2013 but there will seemingly be room for that to change in the future. PlatinumGames is far from a Nintendo exclusive developer, having also released the likes of the Bayonetta and Nier franchises elsewhere.

A multiplatform release would be commercially attractive, however, as The Wonderful 101 has perhaps gone unnoticed as both a PlatinumGames game and a Nintendo game. It certainly earned positive reviews, with IGN’s own returning a 9/10 and calling it “one of the best action games of a generation.”

It hasn’t made much of an impact despite this, though did receive a surprise expansion last year as the After School Hero downloadable content was shadow dropped by PlatinumGames.
