Minecraft Players Build Staggering 1:1 Recreation of New York City

Minecraft players have built a staggering recreation of New York City in 1:1 scale.

Showcased in a Reddit post from d3_cent, below, the build includes iconic locations such as the Brooklyn Bridge, Battery Park, and more. The build is four years in the works and, despite its incredible size, d3_cent said only around 68% of lower Manhattan is complete.

It’s taken so long because “it’s exact,” they said. “Every building has been manually recreated, [with] the right amount of windows, correct window detailing, trash cans where they are in real life, road signs, stop signs, everything.”

Beyond these examples, the team is also making accurate subway systems underground and even the depth of water surrounding Manhattan is accurate. The build is focused on exteriors currently, but the interiors of some famous buildings have also been recreated.

Thousands of Minecraft players have contributed to the project so far but, given how much work even this small portion of New York City has taken, d3_cent said the team is always looking for more contributors.

Minecraft is the best-selling video game of all time with an incredible 300 million copies sold, and it continues to be one of the most popular games around despite being 15 years old, with its emphasis on creativity seemingly offering infinite amounts of playability. Developer Mojang recently announced an end to PlayStation VR support, however, though its PS5 version was finally released in preview form in June.
